Off the Hook
William J. Hall - September 21, 2021

I see you walking from your maple trees -
Moon is full – corn is to your knees.
There’s no shadow on your face;
You’re in your world – you’re in your place -
I disappear without a trace.

I hear you singin’ ‘bout this hard, hard heart;
Shrouded soul that's tearing us apart.
That’s OK, I’ll take the blame -
My coat of mail – your ball and chain.
You know – I thank you just the same.
And you’re sure gonna miss me now I’m gone.

Who else is going to drive you home,
Talk you down over the phone,
From my cellar in the BoHo zone?
Who’s gonna lash you to the mast
So you can face, as you sail past,
The Sirens’ call that’s closing fast:
You’re off the hook for now at last.

I know you well and how you toe the line.
I’m sure you’ll break the spell if given time.
Make no mistake: I’m on my way -
Judgement called, sentence stayed;
Diamonds and rust already paid.
