Valentine
William J. Hall - February 14, 1979

Been a while that we've been gone
I'm happy to hear you're well
Seems like your plans are almost drawn
Near as I can tell
Here's a smile from some familiar faces
Traveling to you from these far away places
It's been miles we've been away

Snowed again the other night
I was here with these friends of mine
Getting the rhythm tracks right
On this valentine
Morning found us still up playing
Pin ball machines near this place we've been staying
So many miles we've been away

If it were another time and place
Take my guitar and I'd quit this rat-race
And tell you that I'm coming home to stay
But these words are written through me
And these songs are given to me
Keep making them up
Putting them down
Calling me to play
Though it keeps us miles and miles away

Had a dream the other night
Heard you call my name
And you said to me
You were with me just the same
Though it may seem crazy
Sometimes I really feel you here, baby
Though it's been miles we've been away

Were it in another time and place
Take my guitar and I'd quit this rat-race
And tell you that I'm coming home to stay
But these words are written through me
And these songs are given to me
Keep making them up
Putting them down
Calling me to play
Another love song today
Tell you all the things I never manage to say
It's miles and miles and miles
And miles of self-imposed exiles
Yet only miles we've been away
